BEN BRONCKHURST WINS

Thirty-four mountain bike riders hit the Armidale Pine Forest track on Monday afternoon for the latest round of the New England Mountain Bikers (NEMTB) Summer Series of races. There was a thunderstorm threatening through out the Juniors and Females race, but this help off until the 6pm start of the Men’s race. Despite this, there were some personal best times recorded in both races. As usual, there were several mechanical issues causing an early end to some peoples race. These included numerous flat tyres.

The 6 pm Men’s race was as usual a fast and at times spectacular race. Three riders managed to complete six laps with the overall placings as follows. First, and winning outright for the first time, was Ben Brunckhorst. Second was Peter “still without a win” Hosking and third was Steve Chapman. Steve was ecstatic about getting six laps in for the first time. In the Under 19 division, Ben Brunckhorst won, with Lorn Gurney second and Peter Platts third. The open Men’s division was won by Peter Hosking. Second was Steve Chapman with Murrey Scorn third.

There was close competition in the female’s race with Holly Harris just beating Jo Benham with Fiona Brunckhorst third. The most pleasing aspect of Monday’s race was the fact that Fiona and Holly stopped to help Jo with a mechanical issue mid race. This shows the true spirit of the sport. Holly and Fiona were the place getters in the Under 19 Female division. Jo was first in the Open Female division followed by Lisa Harris, Nina Stone and Megan Wooster.

This week saw several junior riders move up to the long course with Michael Harris winning. Second was Robert Butcher followed by Angus Gasbari.

Harry Wooster completed 4 laps in the Juniors Short Course race for the first time to win that modified race. Second was Liam Lamb.
