On the weekend the NSW State Cross County Mountain Bike Championships were held at Nowra, south of Sydney. This event is the feeder for the National Champions and brings together the best riders from the State. This is not one of the social charity rides that are becoming very popular with mountain bikers, this is the pointy end of the stick! The competitors at these events are all trying to obtain a position on the podium.
Holly Harris from Armidale had to complete two laps of the 9 km technically tight track to take the first place in the under 17 females event. Over the hour long race she managed to just hold off, by a matter of seconds, a very aggressive challenge from Emily Parkes from Coffs Harbour. This was a well deserved win considering Holly’s pasted year’s training and local race efforts.
David Harris competed in the Masters (+40 years) to take the 3rd position on the podium. Once again a great effort from a rider who has dominated the Masters division in north eastern NSW.
